Dhoruba seemed to welcome the breeze ruffling his fuzzy mane as much as Emerald enjoyed it lifting her ponytail from her sticky-hot neck. She stopped singing to relish the momentary relief. Sydney was supposed to be cooler than this, even on the summer solstice, yet both her and the lion were panting as he slurped water from the trough of his temporary enclosure. She refilled it from a heavy bucket. “Might storm later,” she told him, putting the bucket down and peeling off her long-sleeved top to the t-shirt underneath. The overcast sky lay sullen over the park, gunmetal grey with looming thunderheads. The breeze, thick with greasy electrified dankness, hinted at brooding lightning. It rustled the leaves of a nearby tree, then drifted away.

Fin couldn’t sleep, which made no sense. He’d slogged his guts out in Captain Godfrey’s garden all day, and as soon as the sun was up he’d have to do so again. “Hard labour, it’s your best chance at reform, lad,” the Captain had said when Fin and the other convicts first arrived at his grand North Sydney property, Craig Lodge. “You’ll keep my gardens pristine and you’ll be happy to do so, you understand? I know you have some education, but that won’t keep you from the lash if you misbehave.” With options as clear as that, of course Fin had chosen to behave.

“The winner was clear. The narrative was a page-turner. The story flowed seamlessly, and the characterisation was fantastic. A good old fashioned time slip story! Perfect for middle grade readers.” Paul MacDonald, The Children’s Bookshop at Beecroft, WABIAD Judge 2016

Reviews:

Women’s Ink, July 2017
By Judith O’Connor

Don’t let anyone tell you this novel, the fourth published by Northern Beaches Writers’ Group, is solely for young adults. I quickly found myself engrossed in a classic page-turner so full of action, imagination and suspense that I defy anyone, no matter what age, to put it down. The pace and energy of the plot, descriptive prose and surprise elements are a credit to the skill of the seven authors who, remarkably, wrote this book collaboratively. The deft hand of Editor-in-Chief, Zena Shapter, and her co-editors must no doubt take a lot of the credit for pulling the chapters together so seamlessly.

The book opens in 1829 with 14-year-old Fingal O’Grady, a convict assigned to the master of a grand North Sydney property, impulsively stealing a precious jade spider brooch with ancient and immense powers, The Peacock Spider of Tien Shan. But as he reached for the treasure ‘…slowly, so he didn’t knock anything over…it jumped. The brooch was in his hand and he hadn’t even touched it.’ Thus begins the story of a quest of good versus evil, symbolised by the unpredictable spider with its superhero qualities. The story spins over almost two centuries in time-travel style to the present day where Fin meets Abigail, ‘a girl who loved make-up, YouTube and selfies’. Young readers will love the smart phones, text messages that go viral, hits that trend, police chases, kidnappings, Halloween scares and tattoos, and chapters ending with cliffhangers… A rollicking story.

Rider & the Hummingbird

YA Novella – Science Fiction Thriller

Fourteen-year-old Lan is a computer genius… and a prisoner. After poking around in exactly the wrong websites, Lan’s interest in drones has landed him in the High Country Youth Correctional Facility.

Not a good start.

Lan is resigned to his fate until he discovers that the mysterious hacktivist who framed him is part of a plot to kill thousands of people, including his mum and dad. With the help of Monk and his ferret, Lan breaks out of jail, and races to prevent a disaster that could change the face of Australia forever…

ISBNs: 9780994487315 (print) & 9780994487322 (ebook)
Audience: 12-14 years
Print: 86 pages – 129x198mm – RRP: AUD$15.99
Ebook RRP: AUD$4.99

Lan tossed his dog-eared copy of CNET magazine over the side of his bunk. It hit the floor with a thunk and a crash. A crash? He glanced over the edge. His roommate had left half a glass of blackcurrant cordial on the floor and now it was rolling over the tiles while a small purple puddle seeped across the magazine’s headline: Cool Tech. He grunted and laid back down. Technology was only cool when it was new, and this magazine was already months old. Of all the downsides to being in juvie, the worse was not knowing the latest news. On the outside, Lan could have simply surfed the magazine’s website for the latest tech buzz. But no one in the High Country Youth Correctional Facility was allowed internet access. For a computer nerd like Lan, that was like telling him not to breathe…

A Dolphin for Naia

MG Novella – Science Fiction Thriller

When thirteen-year-old Mason’s parents left him to live on the other side of the country, he swore he would never forgive them, or the invention that kept them so busy…

Now they’ve called him back, promising they can be a family again. But when Mase and his grandmother arrive, the caravan in the shadow of the giant dam is silent and his parents are gone.

All that remains is a cryptic message begging him to bring their strange dolphin-like creation to the coast. Mase suddenly finds himself caught in a race where the price of failure is higher than he could ever have imagined.

Will he ever see his parents again?

The hire car was not as comfy as Grams’ truck back in Perth. After she sold her circus, Grams kept one of its trucks so Mase and his sister Naia could lie down in its sleeper compartment on long trips. But in this tiny pine-stinking Sydney hire car, Mase had to stay upright, and the seat belt dug into his forehead whenever he leant sideways to rest. They’d been up so early to catch the red-eye flight from Perth and now he was just so tired. Once they’d passed the hectic traffic-congested roads around Sydney airport and on the highway towards Cataract Dam, the car rocked more gently. Its rhythm lulled him towards sleep and the silence soothed his head, still sore from the baby who hadn’t stopped screaming on their flight across the country. Yet it felt like only minutes had passed when Grams’ voice cut through the haze…

“This novel has it all! A brilliant, fast-paced adventure… A Dolphin for Naia serves up a fantastic mix of mystery, sci-fi and family intrigues …an engaging and creative story.” Jo-Ann Whalley, Writing WA, WABIAD Judge 2014

“When a book conjures multiple story questions and powerful themes that leave you yearning for the answers in the first few pages, you know that you are in for an absorbing read — which is exactly how A Dolphin for Naia starts. Within moments of opening this novella, I was chasing the answers to the story questions raised: What happened to Naia? Where are Grams and Mase going? Who is the Parliament? Why have this family separated and why is Mase so angry with his parents? These questions create a flawless narrative tension that drive through the book like an unrelenting heartbeat.” Francine Sculli, Buzz Words.

Scribbles in the Dark

MG Novella – Urban Fantasy

Fourteen year old Callum has long wondered what happened to his father…

Callum has lived with his grandparents above their pub in Australia’s outback since his father disappeared, six years ago. Then the rains came.

Along with his foster brother Jake, Callum and his dinosaur sculpture are transported to another world, where questions are answered, and lives changed.

Why is Jake scared of the scribbly gumtrees? Who is the mysterious girl? Is there any way home?

The floorboards of Cal’s bedroom vibrated with the rhythmic thud and strumming twang of country music. Some superstar wannabe was wailing his hardest downstairs in the pub, all for the glory of winning The Winton Hotel’s monthly open-mic session. It was driving Cal insane. Nan and Pop started the competition a couple of years back, to encourage the locals. Cal wished they hadn’t. The stink of smoke and stale beer was never so bad as when the comp was on, and the locals came regardless. Theirs was the only pub round these parts. There was no other place big enough for everyone to get together, not for miles…

Scribbles in the Dark by The Northern Beaches Writers’ Group

“A story that should be widely read and enjoyed… It balances necessary loss with a satisfying and happy ending, providing an emotionally charged yet ultimately hopeful reading experience. This is a book to be treasured…” J C Burke, CBCA Book of the Year Winner, WABIAD Judge 2013

“Scribbles in the Dark, is a gripping read from start to finish, with all the elements of a good story twisted together in its 78 pages. From the very first moment, we are thrown into the world of Cal, a fourteen-year-old boy whose father has disappeared and is living with his grandparents in a pub in outback Australia. Cal seeks reprieve from the pain of losing his father in carving rocks and keeps one of his rocks particularly close to his heart – a dinosaur shaped one that he found right on the spot where his father disappeared on the mysterious banks of the billabong. His other reprieve is Jake, his foster brother who seemingly appeared on their doorstep from nowhere… Scribbles in the Dark is not only a gripping, fantastical read that you’ll not want to put down but it is rippled with many strong messages pertinent to young people and adults alike – dealing with loss and grief, belonging, family bonds and connectedness. The characters are rich with back stories that are cleverly woven through the story arc and the subplots make this novella even more gripping… Read it and enjoy the ride.” Francine Sculli, Buzz Words.

Into Tordon

MG Novel – Urban Fantasy

Only Champions Dare To Enter!

Thirteen-year-old Beth has been waiting for weeks to play in the championship of her favourite online game, Tordon. Now tribes of beastmen roar through her speakers. Game on! She plays to win, until her gaming nemesis Zane challenges her to a real-life risk that has them sucked into a strange world. Here they must push their skills to the limit just to survive!

Faced with riddles, a multitude of dangerous creatures, exotic cultures and scientific impossibilities, Beth and Zane are forced to take on challenge after challenge if they’re ever to return home.

ISBNs: 9781925227147 (print) & 9781925227161 (ebook)
Audience: 8-14 years
Print: 256 pages – 129x198mm – RRP: AUD$17.99
Ebook RRP: AUD$4.99

Beth studied the screen, her heart pounding. This was it—the level she’d fought to reach for months. A horde of angry beastmen raced towards her avatar, yelping as they leapt over the mossy rocks and logs of Tordon’s forest. Spears were raised in their hands and saliva-dripping mutts bound beside them, barking and growling in frenzy. Beyond them, past towering tree columns, a hanging man swung from a gnarled old gumtree, his ropes creaking as he dangled over a square chasm. Beth’s palms grew sweaty. Whoever cut down the hanging man would end the game and score fifty extra points, which would be enough to win Beth the entire championship. The anniversary championship.

Reviews

“This is an impressive debut… The narrative doesn’t falter, and middle-grade readers will delight at how quickly they are thrown into the action of the story… Into Tordon is a pacy, exciting read that middle-grade readers will love getting sucked into.” Bec Kavanagh, Books+Publishing Review

“It’s like Harry Potter on steroids!” Susanne Gervay, author ‘I am Jack’

“Annabel devoured the book, loved it! Had to take it off her at 10pm that night and she finished it next morning. Well done!” Claire, Mum of Annabel

“Into Tordon is an exciting read. Fast-paced, fun and clever… But this book isn’t all action and adventure. The two teens begin with preconceived notions of each other and as they journey… They each find a strength to themselves they didn’t know they had… Into Tordon is a book perfect for middle grade readers looking for an adventure with no romance. It’s fun and exciting with readers never quite knowing what to expect next.” Kate, Fictional Thoughts

“A timely book aimed at a young audience reminding them that girls can be champions too… The story is fast-paced and exciting…” Verushka Byrow, The Children’s Book Council of Australia, Reading Time.

“Beginning with an adrenalin-pumping computer-gaming championship, Into Tordon throws its 13-year-old main characters into a real-life scenario that is as full of risk, riddles and threats as any computer game – or is it, in fact, a computer game? It takes Beth and her antagonistic rival Zane through a fascinating range of cultures and other-worldly scenarios as life-threatening situations and brain-teasing mysteries forge a bond of mutual dependency that grows gradually into Beth and Zane’s firm friendship… full of sudden twists and intriguing turns.” Katharine England, SA Weekend, Well Read.

“The action and adventure in this story keeps the reader on their toes. Surviving being eaten by a large snake being one obstacle to overcome. This is a great read for kids aged 9-14 years and will suit both boys and girls to match the two main characters… Enjoy this action packed adventure.” Melinda McNaughton, Creative Kids Tales.

Who is Z.F. Kingbolt?

Z.F. Kingbolt is actually the pseudonym for nine authors! We got together when Zena Shapter, the founder and leader of our writing group, the Northern Beaches Writers’ Group, suggested we compete in the Write-a-Book-in-a-Day challenge to raise money for The Kids’ Cancer Project. We had so much fun during the challenge, and won ‘National Best Book’ in the challenge too, that when she asked who wanted to do it again we all said, “yes!”

So on one long winter’s day, we all sat in a room and threw ideas about until the best ones stuck. We wanted to write for children, to write a science fantasy, and for the story to be relevant for kids’ today. There were some really crazy ideas as well as some really good ones, and eventually our ideas began to take shape.

A Fearsome Engine

Anthology – Contemporary & Speculative Fiction

Who is the master and who the machine?

This collection of twenty stories by the Northern Beaches Writers’ Group explores this question with horror, humour, pathos and philosophy.

Whether it be in our own place and time, far in the future, the past, or in a universe of their own making, our authors grapple with the interface between humanity and its machines.

Are the things we make ours to command? Will they always be?

And who, exactly, is making whom?

“Our relationship with technology has never been as close or as complex as it is today. Our gentle, stately progress has become, in the last two centuries, a speeding juggernaut of change – a fearsome engine, bearing us at breakneck speed we know not where.” Chris Lake

5 out of 5 stars AMAZON
Short story anthology packed with ideas
By Harriet C Wilson on November 18, 2016

“A Fearsome Engine” is an anthology, a collection of short stories by a writers’ group in the Northern Beaches in Australia. As such, it’s published as much for the authors as the readers, or so you’d think. But I started reading at the beginning, out of curiosity, because I knew some of the writers, and found myself half way through before I realised what the time was. The central idea — humanity’s relationship with technology — is approached from many different angles, and in many different styles — horror to romance to mystery to humour, you name it. The writing is consistently impressive and, all in all, it makes for an exciting, page-turning read. All power to writers’ groups! This one’s a keeper.

Women’s Ink, July 2017
By Valerie Pybus

The introduction says that A Fearsome Engine ‘explores man’s relationship with technology’ but it is a sign of progress that many of the authors and protagonists are female and that the group leader is award-winning author Zena Shapter. An intriguing cover sets the scene for a cornucopia of ideas and stories and this is certainly an eclectic group of stories. I particularly liked ‘Shangri La’ by Chris Lake, where the protagonist was a sad victim and by contrast, ‘Aiko and the Tiger’ by Kylie Pfeiffer, where the protagonist, by contrast, left a defiant legacy. A tongue-in-cheek tale by J.E. Gaulton, ‘The Instructions’, was a definite what if? Who would be controlling whom? And how could anyone reading ‘Fellow Travellers To The End’ by Judith O’Connor, turn the last page and not feel a tightening of the throat with compassion? The terrifying realism of ‘What Is A Disease?’ by Gill Schierhout, focused sharply on our present day inability to halt the overwhelming human pollution of our planet. Thanks also to Susan Steggall for ‘A Poetical Science’, bringing our attention to the wonderful Augusta Ada, Countess of Lovelace, and her achievements. Susan has such a capacity to combine cleverly poetry and arts, interweaving them with science into unforgettable mosaics. Unfortunately there is not space enough to do justice to all the authors individually, only to congratulate them on a very positive kaleidoscope of achievements.
